Don Krumpos

I remember the church basement better than the sanctuary. The sanctuary was performative — polished wood, hymns, sermon voice.

But the basement was where truth lived.

Coffee in styrofoam cups. Cookies on beige plastic trays. Folding metal chairs aligned like quiet soldiers. The smell of mildew and paperbacks. The low buzz of fluorescent lights.

It felt safe in a way the sanctuary never did.

Children understand subtext. They know where the real life happens.

My faith was formed in that basement — not in belief, but in observing how adults behaved when the ritual was over.

I learned to read between the hymns.
