My Dad Died Today

Don Krumpos · Diary

Today was Donnie’s birthday. He had off for Spring break and spent the night. I’m afraid it wasn’t much of a birthday for him because of his grandpa dying the night before. I took him and April and Aaron to breakfast. It was nice to spend time with them. Helen came over not much after and we got photos together. This Friday Donnie will have a celebration with his friends, so that will make up for today.

Sunday , April 5, 2015 — My Dad died today. I brought April and Aaron to the Krumpos’ family Easter celebration and we had a nice time and the kids got to do an Easter Egg hunt. We left about 3:30 and picked up Donnie and the 3 of us saw the movie Big Hero 6. We got to hang out beforehand while wait for the showtime and we just walked around the East Town Mall and the kids had fun goofing around. But while we were at the movie Wei called me and left messages that had had gone. We went home right away but I didn’t tell the kids as I wanted them to enjoy their last few moments and in the car wasn’t the right time to tell them. When we got back to home, most of the Krumpos family was there and there were some tough time for people with a lot of crying and hugs, but it was nice to see everyone and have their support. After Wei April and Aaron had a chance to view the body and grieve some, I had a chance to be alone with Dad’s body and to look at his corpse and have a good cry. It has been a hard last month, but I am glad to feel closer to my Dad and especially to contrast that with the great father he has been for me in my life. He is out of pain and it is over for him, which is what he wanted near the end. It is a nice thought to think of him and Mom walking together finally after almost 22 years of separation after her death. They were so happy together and he is finally at peace again.
